Every time I throw away a plastic water bottle I get irritated at the mounting size of my garbage. Ok recycle...sure, whatever....what about the way we used to do it? Glass Bottles! One blogger described them as heavy and, oh my goodness, you have to return them. Such an inconvenience? Here are a few for the picture books..

Well, the long awaited arrival of my first granddaughter's first birthday has come and gone and now I'm left with a house of newly cleaned toys to put away. So I'm busying myself with my house de-cora!! (sigh) We had a lovely lovely time together and being with family is just soooooo important to living life to the fullest!

Sunday Dinner

So funny how we play mind games with ourself, we can enjoy our selfmade distractions, we can "live our own life", do our "thing", seek "fulfillment", live in the "moment","find ourself", ...etc. But there is nothing in this world like being with your family. When we live too close we take each other for granted...but too far and we pine away at for all the times we miss being together.

My faraway daughter....(too far)....wanting to come back home....wrote me this "choke back the tears" blurb from her poetic mind...

here's what i know:

i want to have sunday dinner with all of you...
to create and learn with/from you
to come over without feeling like the clock is ticking...
to enjoy Ohio in the fall
pick up apples at rouster's
make pies
cora to grow up knowing who her family is...her roots
so much more...but enough for now

Never thought I would go this long in between blog posts! But since August, I've been busy with a few items (I'll share with you later about some other stuff). But today I'll talk about the birth of my granddaughter, Cora Elizabeth. She has changed things for us even though she is over 1,000 miles away. So instead of a snack before bed or "a TVshow" before we hit the hay these days--this is what Kent (my husband) and I do. We call Arizonia to look and talk to Cora on our computer screen. We act completely silly so Cora will watch us--sometimes I think we are turning into cartoons. Today, when she saw me, she gave me a half face crooked grin...the first for me on video cam. I was giddy and still am basking in that precious smile. The things we do for our grandkids! Life is so sweet!

Kendra and Cora

I've taken a step back and away from sewing for just a bit....re-evaluating all my activities since the birth of my first granddaughter. Becoming a grandmother on August 19th has really been life changing. I knew that it would be good but I had no idea of how profound it would be, and how deeply it would affect me. BUT it's more wonderful than I could have every imagined! Here are two pictures from 1983 (Kent and me with Kendra) and two pictures from 2010 (Cora). See the resemblence? I've heard that Cora's hair appears to have some "red" in it--just like Kendra's did, but at this point in time I don't think Cora is a "redhead" like her grandmother. As far as grandma names, looks like so far, I'm "grammie"!

Best Friend's Quilt Shoppe over on Colerain Avenue
here in Cincinnati professionally quilted my quilt.
I chose a stitch pattern called floopy flowers.
Since the inspiration fabric has bees,
I thought it was appropriate to have flowers.
I also had them do something special in the quilting, can you see it?

Cora's Quilt

I'm sorry I've been remiss in blogging lately. Everything has taken a back seat to preparing and anxiously awaiting my first grandchild, Cora's arrival. This is Cora's quilt before I took it to be quilted. I'm picking it up on Friday and then I'm flying out of Indianapolis on Sunday --heading for Mesa, AZ, the land of first grandchildren. Cora's due date is the 13th, but what "first" child ever came on their due date? I just so can't wait for this blessed event!

What is it about green and blue with a touch of...of...antique gold??? I just adore it and perhaps this will be the color scheme for some room in my house.....suggestions? I gathered some of these among other items for my "first Etsy treasury" made by me. The pillbox hat is on reserve for me at TPARTY. The earrings MIGHT make it down to the Mercantile Antique Shoppe, if I don't claim them for myself first.

A Little Inspiration for Wednesday--ZiBagz---refreshing!

I love this bag maker, she inspires me. I ran across her today on Etsy, her shoppe name is Zibagz. (Don't you just love that name!!) There is a sense of freedom in her style. I love the incorporation and combination of vintage crochet, buttons, fabric etc. AND the way that she poses her beauties is "loverly"! So I ask myself, "why don't I create something like this?"....and then it goes to my mental bucket list and I determine at some point to do just that. But, what is so interesting to me is that we can't escape ourselves and our own innate creativity and style. What comes from our creative resource is who we are and when we try to duplicate what others do, aside from just "copying", it will be different and the result is always "our interpretation". It often feels like you are fighting yourself..ever feel that way? So maybe someday when the "mood" strikes I'll have the "freedom" to do something similar? In the meantime please enjoy! BETA PREVIEW

Say hello to "beta"..she is not completely "finished" yet, but I couldn't wait to share some pictures. This is the combination of fabrics I posted awhile back. Since this is the second design version and I'm attempting a prototype, hence the name "beta". The floral is a wonderful weight linen blend. The vintage buttons just "happened" and I love the woven stripe which quietly reiterates all the colors. Beta's completion has been delayed due to waiting for "inspiration" to show up so therefore adding to the characteristic of being a bit of a snail . Hopefully the finishing touches will be completed this week, and she'll be up to the challenge of "ETSY" , pass Kendra and Katie's inspection (my lovely fashionista daughters), and I'll start on another pattern design for this fabric "duo".

Vintage Linen Tea Towel--Now Tripping the Light Fantastic as a Modern Linen Clutch

I was perusing my Etsy account a little while ago and was looking to see if I received any new "hearts" on any of my items. I gasped when I clicked on this clutch. It was showing over 500 views and 82 hearts! Wow! So I'm thinking...did it make it into a popular treasurey or better yet, to the front page of Etsy and I didn't see it? (I know it made it into one treasury, but that was after the hearts were put on it.) Does anyone out there know if there is a way to find out? I'm emailing Etsy and asking if they can check somehow. But anyway...that is pretty neat and I'm so proud of this beautiful vintage linen tea towel!

MYSTERY SOLVED
The mystery has been solved as to the reason why I received so many hearts on this item. This clutch was featured in Etsy's Blog: The Storque in an article by Emily Bidwell entitled: The Heat is On. Take a moment and take a look if you have time. The mystery was solved by Craftcult: a website devoted to taking care of Etsy sellers by providing much needed technical and statistical information and also advertising and featuring Etsy sellers. I didn't know anything about this until my friend Lynn told me about it. I'll have to introduce you to Lynn soon--you will love her!

In Line At McDonalds on a TGIF

So, every three months or so, I allow myself to go to McDonalds for breakfast on my way to work. This morning was that morning. When I got there the line for the drive thru was pretty long, and so I knew I'd be a few minutes late to work, but this was my quaterly treat to myself so I stayed. My allergies were really bothering me this morning so I spent the majority of my time waiting-- looking in the mirror and dabbing my eyes, so my mascara wouldn't run.

When I got to the payment window there was a surprise. The lady in the car in front me had paid for my breakfast and left me a note. It said, "Do something nice for someone! Have a blessed Day!" Wow, wasn't that nice! So I did. I handed the note back to the McDonald's employee, paid for the person behind me, and asked them to pass the note along.

Now that was a good way to start TGIF!! (The McDonald's employee told me that this happens all the time--so I'm wondering...has it happened to you?) (Side Note: Did she see me dabbing my eyes and thought I was crying?--haha!)

GEORGIAPEACHEZ

Michelle (Pink Daisy's Blog) and I were chatting down at the Mercantile Antique Shoppe a few days ago about Zara's neat new retro "frames" she has been making. (I'll post a picture sometime of her frames when I get a chance.) I started to tell Michelle about a similar type of frame I had seen on Ebay a few years ago--to my utter amazement--Michelle remembered that same frame and remembered the maker --Georgiapeachez! So that led to a few paragraphs of conversation, talking about all the different things that we remember Georgiapeachez making. We laughed and agreed that we definitely had spent "a little bit of time" surfing. But we both found out that we had followed Georgiapeachez from Ebay to now being on Etsy.

So, I "convo'd" Georgiapeachez (her first name is Suzy by the way) on Etsy and and told her about my conversation with two of her admirers. It was nice making the personal contact and hearing from her. She was very positive and allowed me to show off her sewing room--along with a few other pictures of her work.

It must have been four or five years ago that I first found Georgiepeachez. On her Ebay site, she posted these two pictures of her sewing room. I was intrigued and smitten. Her distinctive style and flair for vintage was evident. I saved them on my computer for inspiration! Don't we all want our sewing rooms to look this good?

It's been fun watching Georgiepeachez as she has made retro frames, purses, pin cushions, jewelry, aprons, handkerchief make up bags, retro Christmas frames, etc...here are a few samples of her amazing work. Who is Ume Komachi?

This has been forced on my bucket list...finding out who this person is and why their fabric has disappeared from stores! I love love this fabric. The Japanese know how to do cotton! I love the weaving of the different cotton threads--it begs to be touched and admired.

The color combination, orange, red and --teal, aqua, seafoam--just what is that color supposed to be called any way? It came in a few different color combos, but this was MY favorite. The bead dangle was from the talented JoEllen of Ally Beads. I love her style--I could hand her anything and say..go for it and I know I will love it. It was a blast to put this together. Unfortunately my stash of this is so tiny now, it will be the last offering of this fabric in anything I do...unless I stumble on more. Please let me know if you have seen this anywhere. Enjoy!

It's Sticky Business

I have a comparison to share, that I wished someone would have somewhere shared with me. So you want to try your hand at making a some frame purses? Here is my opinion of the glue to use.

First of all there is "Gutermann" which touts itself as the "best". I used that first and then I stumbled across "UHU" which also boasts about being great for locking your material in the frames. Since I was almost out of the Gutermann I thought..."oh why not, I'll try the UHU and just add it to my order." (This supplier doesn't sell Gutermann") Well my supplier notified me that my shipment of frames and glue came back and the glue had burst and gotten all over the frames, but not to worry a new package was in the mail. That was not pleasant but finally my order did arrive and no glue spillage. So I'm making this short story long, but I finally got around to trying the UHU. I have THREE TUBES of it. And guess what! It's messier and runnier and doesn't dry as fast as the Gutermann-- and I ruined a piece of fabric with it. SO lesson learned...ONLY GUTERMANN will do for me from now on. I hope this information helped someone else before they go trying the UHU! If you have any other glue products or experiences, please share them, so we can all be the better. Thanks!

Wisteria!

This is what I’ve been viewing as I drive to work for the past ten? days! Today I had the presence of mind to make sure my camera was in my bag and stop to take pictures. I’m sure they won’t last much longer and I had to capture a little of their beauty. As I was taking these this morning, the lady of the house nearby told me to break some off…so now my office smells like wisteria!

Wikipedia says that wisteria is a member of the pea family…who would have thought? It is a woody climbing vine that is common to the eastern US and other countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. Google also brought up a picture of a bonsai wisteria…now that was interesting. But I shall enjoy them today, and my all male office members will have to endure their perfume. Love it!

Bleeding Hearts

When I was a little girl I loved to visit my grandmother in the hills of Pennsylvania. My grandmother, Elizabeth Ellen (for whom I'm named after) was a remarkable woman for her small stature. She weighed 88 lbs when she got married. (I have her wedding dress!). Her little white house (with a white picket fence) was amazingly organized and she had a focus for each day of the week--you know--Monday for wash etc. I would go down into the small walk-out basement and look at the huge tree trunk beems, all her homemade canned goods, fresh fruit, old fashioned washing machine, and snoop around like any kid would do. The corner that held the huge coal furnace was the only place from which I stayed away. The smells are still very clear in my mind. Every morning her breakfast was like a formal meal. The table was set perfectly with a tablecloth and cloth napkins. I thought it was the biggest deal when my grandfather taught me to eat ketchup on my hash browns. I could go on and on.

My grandmother's back yard was a sloping hill that ended up down at my uncle's house. You could go through the evergreens or you could go on the stone laid path that meandered down between their huge garden. (I can still see my grandfather out there hoeing.) On this path, every spring I would love to look at my grandmother's flowers. The bleeding hearts were just beautiful. Oh how I wanted to pick them, but that was off limits. So, I've been meaning to get this beautiful plant for myself and well now, "Look!". I've got some, so I had to go lay down on the grass this morning before taking off for work and take a picture before they---can't say it--expire. It's so befitting to have them flourish this spring (for the first time) with the passing of my mother last October. Aren't they beautiful?

Did you ever google your name or your personal website or blog? I tried doing that last night and found something rather interesting.

Someone whose I.D. is mostlymaple , ("a twenty something day dreamer, publication designer by and and by night is always searching for inspiration and motivation") highlighted one of my purses (click on purses to see the original blog post) from awhile ago on stylefeeder.com and asked everyone to rate the purse. It looks like the few that looked at it gave it FOUR STARS. (not bad huh?) (relief!)

It's amazing where "the surfing of the net" will take you. So, have you every clicked that "next blog" thingy at the top of blogspot blogs and see where it leads? Happy Surfing!

Back to fabric land and new fabric and inspiration. I've got a new shipment coming in and can't wait! I'd tell you that I'm working on a fabulous new bag right now, but I better not....hah!

It Is Finished . . .Introducing The "Amy Bag"

This has been a "good" Friday! I got the day off from work, it's 80 degrees, the sun /Son is shining, (I'm thankful for the supreme sacrifice that my Savior made so many years ago) and I've been able to resurrect this handbag from the "I'm not happy with it" pile. Thwarted by a migraine of three days, that's finally over too! I'm so psyched about this bag pattern and I can't wait to make it again in a different fabric.

I shortened the height by two inches and added wider and more decorative straps. I made the rounded bottom wider and longer, and used very thick interfacing for reinforcement. The hardware really sets it off and only the finest was used. This purse will hopefully give it's new owner, Amy, much joy. (This bag is now hence forth to be named after Amy!) Cloth Vs Leather

For Christmas I purchased a side of leather and have some lofty plans for its future usage with my bags. Until then I'm constantly scouring the country side for inspiration for cloth bags. This pattern has stuck in my mind for quite some time. It's made of leather, but I think it might present well in cloth. I have some picked out, but haven't gotten to it yet! But I thought I'd share the idea with you and see what you thought.

CUSTOM ORDER FROM ETSY

I know people who love to take custom orders and others who at the very mention cringe in fear. Custom orders are just as the word implies, a person has an idea in their head and it is given to you to project into reality. For me, I enjoy the challenge and especially like it if I can actually please the customer.

Right now I'm finishing up a custom order for a lovely lady on Etsy. She saw the bag I made for Katherine and wanted one from that fabric. The result of the order stretched me to make a style of bag that I never have made before so that is a real plus. (The bag has a rounded bottom--see picture below) I was trying to get the order done in quick fashion, and well, when I finished, the balance of the bag was--nope...not up to my standards. Members of my family thought it was perfectly fine and I should send it off. But, you see, if I would have taken my time, laid it down and walked away for a day, I would have caught the seemingly insignificant detail that now is demanding its own way.

So, now to redo or remake? REMAKE I will so I can live with myself and know that the lovely lady will get something that she will love to carry for a long time. And then I can sleep better.

This bag's requirements: 12inch zipper, 12inch height, 4 inch depth, no pockets on the outside. Sounds simple right? The Challenge: where to put the straps and not letting it "slouch" in the middle when carried. I made the straps the decorative element--that was a good thing. Most of the slouching was eliminated by the strategic location of the straps except for a slight "bend" (if you will )in the center when carried. By moving the straps inward by an inch or so any slouching tendancies should be totally eliminated. One inch off the height would also benefit the bag's asthetics and practicality. We shall see what happens with the "remake".

Back From Phoenix

Back to the cold, cloudy, moisture ridden, damp, Ohio. Can someone please tell me why I live here? I love Phoenix, but then I've never been there in the summer. Maybe my opinion would change. But the time spent with my daughter was so wonderful. We did a lot of hunting for baby girl items--she's due in August--and my first grandchild. I'm elated to say the least. We found a diaper bag while we were out there by JJ Cole Collection called Theory. I love it and now of course, I want to duplicate it. Isn't this one of the neatest diaper bags you've ever seen? You can find it by clicking here. We did find Pottery Barn's cherry blossom bag a close second to this. If you know of something better, leave a comment with it's location so we can all check it out!

Of course I visited a fabric store while in Phoenix too. It was called SAS--fabric by the pound. I got a great deal on a piece of "panache" fabric by Moda that I will be sure to try very soon. I love this. What do you think I should do with it? Unfortunately I will have to take some pictures myself, the sample below, doesn't do this fabric justice at all. There are very colorful flowers in it that are just gorgeous!

Feeling Blue?

The sun has finally decided to shine today. Yay!

I found this purse on Etsy's shop, refreshaccessories, and i can't quit staring at it so I have to share it with you. It's a cute "barrel" shaped purse made from "neglected decorator fabric and "dad's old shirt". That was some "old shirt"! When I was in high school I paid a bundle for a little black leather barrel purse and then about ten years ago I had some designer named khaki-greenish leather barrel purse with bright orange interior. It's now, of course, that I wish I still had them. I guess there are some advantages to being a pack rat--maybe. The other note is that this purse is blue, light blue. "Just when you think that something is "out" it's "in" again." --(spoken in an accent like Project Runway's, Heidi Klum) Bonnie and I were having the "blue" discussion this afternoon at the shoppe. It went something like, " yeah, I thought blue was out but now it's everywhere!" Bonnie (of bonflourish) admitted she is not a blue person but is now finding herself thinking blue ideas all day. Okay, so, we want to know--who starts these things anyway? And, in conclusion, we both agreed that purple is definitely "out"...or is it?? Hah!

Anyway, I love the detail with the outside pockets and the inside zipper, dad's shirt must have been made out of some kind of mesh material, I'm stumped on that one, but I like it. I just finished making a blue toile cosmetic pouch. Now I guess I will "have" to drag out that neglected pale blue decorator fabric that I have and see what kind of barrel purse I will come up with, right after I finish the plaid sailing weekend bag, or the vintage earring remake, or the...you get the idea. This material is absolutely beautiful--robins egg combined with shades of brown and gold. One of my favorite materials it was just the thing to make something for my amazingly talented seamstress sister, Laura Gail. I've wanted to make her something for quite awhile, but nothing was ever "good enough". So this lucious fabric combined with one of my favorite 'pilgrim' charms stepped up for the special occasion. I'm not sure whether I used the right side or wrong side of the fabric, it's so pretty, it was just hard to tell which was which. But off to Pennsylvania this little pochette has gone.

I am always in seach of unique and sometimes trendy fabric. This piece took a few days to "find" but it really caught my eye. There is something special about the cotton that they make in Japan--you can see and feel the weave, plus, it's a home decor weight. I honestly don't see how bags are made with anything less than home decor weight material. Anything less, in my opinion does not do justice to a regular size handbag. This material is a stunning, large-scale print of mums and leaves and is printed on a background of waves with motifs reminiscent of sashiko embroidery. I can't wait to get it! But then I'll have the chore of deciding what bag design will show off this masterpiece--on to design inspiration.....wherefore art thou in this bleakest of winter months?!

Seagreen Vintage Inspired Floral For Katherine

When I took this bag down to the shop, my lovely friend, Katherine, took one look at it and had to have it! Thank you, thank you Katherine!

Making purses is like writing a song. My brother in law who owns a recording studio calls most of the songs written --"fillers"--he says only a few really really good songs are written each year. This bag is not a "filler". I fell in love with this wonderful shade of blue--or is it green fabric-- filled with roses and blue hydrangeas--seagreen is what it's formally named. I love the vintage buttons on the outside and the two outside pockets lined in brown feux suede. The closing zipper is a vintage zipper, so as far as zippers go, I really liked this one--it's brown too. The inside is a seafoam silk blend fabric with offwhite and caramel colored stripes. I love this fabric, it was wonderfully soft and light--a delight for sewing!

I bid "adieu" to this lovely creation and hope that Katherine enjoys it for a very long time!

I love it when I find something on Etsy that I haven't seen before. I love the use of these buttons from Etsy's Nataliefarrell . Not only on the front side, but the bottom--how cute is that! The choice of print and color for this particular pouch is spot on too!

MIMS you've done it again . . ."this clever and roomy little nap sack becomes a SHOULDER BAG with a tug of the straps!" I feel like I've stumbled onto something very good, and something that is relatively new to Etsy. MIMS, I love your choice of rich, traditional, quality fabric. The kind of fabric whose life has been extended through out the years because they have proven themself, the patterns that are reminicent of prior years thoughts and ideas. That combined with a modern (YET FUNCTIONAL) pattern...that is what I call "perfect"! After my daughter's wedding, I will have to own one of MIMS lovely designs!! It's a bit unexplainable why I like this bag...but I do. BUT, it's pretty explainable what I would change. The stitching on the handles and trim is the wrong color, it needs to either match the fabric, be sewn on the reverse side so no stitching is seen or sewn by hand and then the "hand stitching" can be shown without apology. AND, SO... I would get that drapery roping and stuff the "handle " so it's round and not flat. ONE MORE THING, I think this bag can be done...quite expectably in "linen", or with a very FUN fabric that makes its own statement. HOWEVER, I do like the fabric shown on this particular AVA Bag. I like the way the floral design on the back is complimentary to the front. (not diggin' the bow either..you?) Pretty cute the way the designer incorporates her label/brand on the inside pocket. There is something about a bag made from fabric--when fabric looks more than just fabric--this falls into that category for me. The Etsy designer, MimsMaine, describes its construction as "built like a suitcase, but is very light." That is what I like to hear--so that means it DURABLE! And in this economic upheaval, we definately need durability--something that lasts! I love the strapping detail, it's decorative but also serves a purpose. Right now I can't sew for a number of reasons and it driving me bananas, so I figure the next best thing is showing off other people's creativity...until I can get back into the swing of things.

This lovely clutch caught my eye on Etsy. It's cloth, but the weave is big enough to enunciate it's construction roots and cross over to something more than just "cloth". And the placement and color of the ruffles, magnificant! The Etsy designer, "morewarped", from Virginia, calls this "Fat Free Ruffles" . Check out her shop if you get the chance, it worth a gander.

I love summer, and I love the fact that my teacher husband is home who spoils me on a regular basis! I'm counting the days now until hubby goes back to teaching and dreading it! But as August arrives, who can help but anticipate the beautiful colors that the change of the season will soon bring? So this little excursion into green, silver, and black reminds me that the leaves are about to take their own colorful trip. I'm really excited about this new handbag design for fall. The design is fun, it has plenty of room (bottom width is 12 inches) without being too big and the vintage button is the perfect accent for the fabric. LAVENDER SACHETS "Lavande Poche"

It has been so much fun making these lavender sachets, "lavande poche" (french). I made a special trip out to Springbrook Meadow Lavender Farm in Hillsboro, OH (www.ohiolavender.com) to get the lavender right off the farm. There is nothing like smelling that intoxicating aroma of natural lavender. If you have never experienced the "real thing" you don't know what you are missing! "Artificial" lavender products cannot produce quite the same fragrance . The "lavande poche" are also made with only the finest quality and designer quilting fabric, a colorful vintage hankie, and unique vintage button. One of the nicest things about them is that they are made to be refillable. That means three things, the filling is only made at their time of purchase, they are hand washable, and they can be used for years to come. Pictured here are some examples and a couple dressed to travel in their special box and wrapping--ready to share their lovely aroma.

A New Hat, Katie's Fresh Cherry Pie--Elizabeth is 91!

The big day is here, mother is 91 years old! We celebrated with her favorite -- roast, mashed potates, cole slaw, carrots, biscuits, vanilla ice cream, and fresh cherry pie made by Katie. It was Katie's first pie and it was mother's first 91st birthday. My friend Linda gave mother the prettiest hat with Daisies. Only Linda could have been so thoughtful to think of the perfect gift for someone who is 91! Mother suffers from having a hard time remembering the present-- so the hat can be talked about for days to come, reminding her of her special day! Thanks Linda! It was great few moments in time that will be cherry--ished for years to come! (please view slideshow inthe right column)

Linda, artist, teacher, and entrepreneur, who claims to be "really hard on bags" brought this by to show me. She has been using this Pear Mcgee since September '07 and says she just loves it because it still looks great! I was happy to see the purse again too since it was one of my favorites and very early creations.

What is it about the French language that is so appealing? It is the way it rolls off the tongue in such a smooth flowing manner? Is it the images of picturesque and romantic Paris? Or might it be the light-hearted tales of Peppe Le Pew that make us all laugh so much?

There have been some requests for sunglasses or eyeglasses cases down at the Mercantile Shoppe. La Vue De Poche is the result of that request. It was such fun making them, the colors are so beautiful, and of course, how could you miss the fabulous vintage buttons they are sporting? These lovely "poches" will make their way to the shoppe and on etsy shortly. . .it's hard to say goodbye!

I was out to lunch with my almost 91 year old mother, who has a tremendous spirit but struggles with remembering what she has done in the present. She is legally blind from having macular degeneration and her hearing isn't so hot either. I am not able to remember the last time I read her exquisite handwriting. So when I was bantering with my 15 year old son about the definition and spelling of facetious, it was remarkable that my "dear old maw" (we weren't allowed to call her "mom") chimed in sharply and distinctly (before my son could utter a sound) "f-a-c-e-t-i-o-u-s!". She then informed me that the old "noodle" still worked! That may seem like an awfully small thing to get enthused about, but for me . . .well I was able to see a glimpse of the person that my mother once was and who now -- is just a shadow.

I'll never forget Mrs. Oligee. She was probably the strictest teacher I had in school. "Don't chew gum!" "Don't put your feet up on the rungs of the desk in front of you!"-- absolute quiet and attention was required. She was also perhaps the oldest teacher I ever had as well, her clothing, though outdated for the time, was alway impeccable and color cooridinated down to the jewelry she wore. Years later I was garage sale hopping and I stumbled on the garage sale that one of her family members was having since she was in a nursing home. There was all her jewelry! I wish I had gotten all of it but I settled for this button bracelet. The bracelet that had such a lovely jingling sound as she would pass by my desk. Now every time I wear it, my mind is flooded with those fond memories. I'm not the only one who loves it--my two daughters love it and so does everyone else that sees it. It's something that I will treasure even beyond it's stunning appearance. I hope you enjoy looking at it today!

Is Life Just A Bowl of Cherries?

Nope, sorry to say it's not. My mother who is about to celebrate her 91st birthday in July told me a saying one time. "It's a great life if you don't weaken, but then who wants to be strong?" I was always puzzled at that until I got older and now I think I realize what she meant. I found this vintage linen pouch at an antique store a while back. It's such a simple item, so simplistic in its structure, yet it brings me such joy to have it. So when life doesn't seem to be handing out cherries (like today) I get this out and just look at it, contemplate the simpler things in life, and encourage myself to be a stonger person!

I was perfectly fine with the cicada (you say cicada, I say secada?!) infestation here in Cincinnati--you know--thinking of all the good they must be doing, providing such a delectible snack for the hungry birds---etc--that is up until today, when one of the the red-eyed demons tried to fly in my ear coming out of Main Cup in Old Milford at lunch! But now, it's no more Mrs. Nice Person! "Get out of my way Mr. Cicada!" (note the tribute to the male gender) We've had them now a few weeks and as far as I am concerned they have worn out their welcome!

Wheel Just Have to Wonder

The funniest things show up to get their picture taken with my creations. This glass-wheeled slipper rolled in this morning. Roller skates make you think of 1950's rootbeer stands, skating car hops and milkshakes. All the makings of a good old-fashioned American summer. What you wouldn't expect is a victorian, heeled shoe paired with wheels. What WERE they thinking??

From The Inside Out

There is a children's song that starts out, "from the inside out...da da da." It's always interesting when I peddle for honest feedback from my two wonderful, grown-up daughters--their idea of what should be the inside and what should be the outside don't always match with what I have in mind. I just love the materials that I chose for the latest Pear that I made last evening. The textures and patterns are so subtle but offer just the right background that is needed for a particular look that I am going after. There isn't much left of these two fabrics and when I use the last of them it's like saying goodbye to an old friend. The button on this is just fabulous I think. I don't know whether it's "that old" so not sure it can be classified as mother of pearl...probably more like "plastic of pearl"..(lol) . ..nonetheless...it's beautiful.

A New Tradition

In about a week it will be my 28th wedding anniversary. Just out of curiosity I looked up a list of the traditional wedding gifts corresponding to years. My husband and I never took part in this little custom but looking back I wish we had. Maybe it isn't too late to start? Apparently silver is the traditional and modern gift for 25 years together but after your 15th anniversary the traditional gifts taper off into increments of 5 years. So I guess I have to wait for the big three-zero. Wait...I think I might have an idea for all of those in-between times. Maybe...I don't know...FABRIC? I absolutely love getting new fabric! Getting new pieces always inspires me to create a new bag with a totally different feel than the one I made before. Speaking of bags...I added this new one to my shop!

Okay...I know what you’re thinking. What IS that creature perched atop my newest pochette? A tiny demon? An ugly child? Well no, it’s called a pixie and actually quite collectable. Beauty certainly is in the eye of the beholder-- and to me these little sprites are kind of cute. Yesterday I added this new FUN and very PINK pochette to my shop on Etsy (pearmcgee.etsy.com). Joellen, of AllyBeads in Milford, designed the beaded zipper-pull with beads from her shop and a beautiful, handcrafted, lampwork bead from fellow Etsian rufusandroxie. It also features a festive, pocketed interior to match the spunky, pink fabric on the outside. Making this bag certainly put me in a summery-SPIRIT!
